SEEK: Active Faith

The word “seek” is an action word.  It is not passive.  It is not inactive.  It is purposeful, intentional, resolute.  God calls us to seek Him.

My little boys love to play hide-and-go-seek.  One child joyfully overturns pillows and cushions in search.  He jumps behind curtains and runs into shower stalls.  He searches high into closets and low under beds.  Little eyes, delighted heart, hopeful seeker– he does not give up the search.  One brother on a mission to find the other.

This one seeking does not complain it is his turn to hunt because he has become a treasure hunter.  He explores our home with excitement and laughter.  The suspense eventually fills the air as we all wait to see when one will find the other.

Their seeking has inspired me.  Am I seeking after Jesus?  Unlike my children, He does not hide in dark corners.  Rather – He waits for me.  What would my faith look like if I were seeking like them … in anticipation, with joy, hopeful, excited — eager?  Do I seek after God as if my heart will burst with every verse I read?  Or has the seeking become passive? Rather than hunting for soul-filling treasure, I am waiting for God to put on a show for me.

How have I become casual with seeking God’s goodness in my every day?

Do I look for Him high in the sky and low in the flowers?  Are moments spent solely for the purpose of seeking His glory?  Or do I pass by His beauty just a bit too quickly as I rush to our next thing.

My boys, so full of life and hope, seek with passion.  I do not seek after God with wild hunger determined to be filled with His goodness.  Rather than thirst after the Word that refreshes parched hearts … I scratch off quiet time from a “to-do” list.

1 Chronicles 16:11 Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always

Matthew 6:33 seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Jeremiah 29:13 is one of my favorite verses.  I love it for a few reasons. 1. God reminds us to seek Him.  2. God promises we will find Him.  3. We are told it requires all our heart.

Will you join me and seek Him with passion?  To come to His Word with hunger not obligation nor time restraints?  You will find Him!

Ready or not, here I come!

  1. So encouraging, Stef! And such a great example with your boys hide-and-seek play of how our hearts CAN have that same passion and joy…..

    I am challenged! Thank you!

  2. The one thing I’m learning through the #hellomornings study of 1 Peter is that I don’t have to take Him and His truth in massive chunks at a time. A lot of time fewer, smaller chunks meditated on daily give more depth than bigger amounts can. Oh how I love being able to look at children and learn from their innocence of heart!

  3. Stef, what a wonderful post! Made a copy & putting it in my “beautifulbinder”.
I don’t just want to cross off posts read, especially in this series. I want to have it to meditate on, study out more, to work on, and get in my spirit where I am changed! You know what I thought about with your example of kids & hide n go seek? When they have found the person, yes they are excited, but amazingly, they say, “let’s do it again!” Your turn!” Don’t they? They could do it all day! What about me? I so soon give up (the chase). This might be a message I’ll put up on the shelf! Lol!

  4. Piper says:

In our world today everyone seems to be in search of something. And most look in all the wrong places. Yet, God is right there waiting for us with open arms an we continue to turn the other direction time and time again. For me, I turned and turned in every direction but to Him. One day I finally realized that HE WAS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I praise Him today for never leaving me nor giving up on me. Even on days that I fill my life with too much busyness, and I feel alone, He is right there with me.
