About Alle

Alle is first and foremost, a follower of Christ - slowly learning to love Him more each day and working through that part of the Journey that involves daily surrender. She is married to her best friend and drummer Nate and is forever thankful for his "no matter what" love. She recently added "mama" to her list of titles with the arrival of their action-packed, cuddly boy, Auggie. After all of that - she is a creative-soul. Her heart is at it's fullest when she is actively engaged in being an image-bearer of the ultimate Creator with her music. As a singer/songwriter, the weaving of melodies and words has its roots deep in her heart and her blog, Chasing-Eden is an extension of that passion. In that space she hopes to fully explore what it means to live a "life full of Him" and share that experience with others.

The KING Has Come! | A MLG Playlist Exclusive

This was the first year I pulled out my Christmas music prior to Thanksgiving.  I’ll just let you imagine the horror on my husband’s face when this went down.  I used the argument that our toddler needed extra time to learn Christmas songs than December alone would allow, but I think he’s on to me.

That being said, there is an insane amount of “Christmas” music out there, folks + everyone has their favorites. But today I’ve gathered up an exclusive playlist just for Must Love God readers titled, The KING Has Come!  Each song connects us to the true reason we celebrate during this season — Jesus Christ.  So, break out the hot cocoa, grab your family, + turn up the volume while you decorate, bake, + wrap up the gifts this year!

A Review: “I’ll Hold You in Heaven” + An Offer

In this space of hope, healing, and love, you may have noticed some of our writers centering on a theme recently.  A theme of remembrance in honor of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month – a theme that touches many of our own writing team and an even greater number of the women in this grace-filled community.

In keeping with this theme, today I’d like to share a small, but incredibly powerful resource with you.  Whether you’ve had to walk the dark road of surrendering a child back to God yourself, or if you are a ministry leader who interacts with those healing from a miscarriage, or you volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center, or perhaps you’re simply a woman who wants to bless and encourage another sister who is grieving and in pain…this book is for you.

The Review

Jack Hayford has packed beautiful words of wisdom, healing, grace, and hope into just over 100 pages of a small book that takes the reader on a journey through Scripture into the heart of God as it concerns the loss of a little one.

”I’ll Hold You in Heaven: Healing and Hope for the Parent Who Has Lost a Child Through Miscarriage, Stillbirth, Abortion, or Early Infant Death.”

Hayford is clear in the introduction of this little book, to state the purpose of its writing.  That is, “to offer a path to hope and healing – not through happy talk or platitudes, but through the solid footing of God’s Word.”  With that foundation firmly set in place, the first three chapters work through issues like, “Was my unborn child, in the fullest sense of the meaning, actually a human being,” “Is [my child] sensitive and responsive as a spiritual entity,” and “Is there any evidence that he or she possesses insight or intellect in the most spiritual sense?”  Moving forward, Hayford then addresses the heart cry of every parent who has lost a young one, “Will I see them again in Heaven?”  As a huge spoiler alert (if the title of the book didn’t already alert you), the answer is a resounding, “YES!”  Again, pointing to Scripture as the backdrop of every point made, every issue tackled, every question answered, Hayford gently handles the heart of the matter with hope.  He concludes the book with advice on the grief process and practical, Biblical steps to addressing the issue of abortion, using his own heart struggle and wrestling with God as a framework.

I understand that beyond a brief summary and outline, I haven’t given you many details of the Scripture Hayford uses, the points he makes, or the practical steps he details in this book…that, dear one is because I want you to get the book and read it for yourself!  For a few dollars, you can work through the questions this book brings to the light for the sake of healing your own heart, or perhaps for walking through the dark spaces with a friend who is in pain.  Most assuredly, your deepest pain will find restoration.

The Offer

In closing, I’d like to offer one more thing, dear one.  If you have walked through, or are currently in the middle of, the darkness that comes with losing a child…I want to walk with you.  As your sister, I want to intercede on your behalf in the Throne Room and ask God for His grace, healing, and love to surround you.  Simply send me an email…you can share your story with me (knowing it will be held in the strictest confidence), or you can simply ask, “Please pray.”  I promise to stand with you…you can connect with me at alle@chasing-eden.com

Grace and Blessings, Dear Ones.

Five Ways to Worship While on Vacay

Between throwing our swimsuit into the suitcase and printing off our itinerary and road maps, let’s take a minute to pause and make sure we’re packing one of the most important things into our vacation bags…our worship.

Scripture is clear about the role worship plays in the life of a Follower of Christ…in fact, it doesn’t play a role – it’s our actual identity.

And you never leave your identity behind…just because you’re going on vacation doesn’t mean you stop being a mother, or a friend, or a blogger.  How those identities play out may look a little different while you’re relaxing and recharging, but they don’t cease to be a part of you.  In the same way, our identity as worshippers should travel with us.

In Scripture, John points out that we are to worship God…truly worship Him in spirit and truth.  What does that look like as we take to the road for a week of “fun in the sun?”  Here are five practical ways you can continue to live out a life of true worship with your family or a group of friends while on vacation.

  1. Give Him Your Playlist – Dedicate your playlist or the portion for that early morning chunk of the ride to worshipping the Father.  If you don’t have a good library of worship music, check with a friend or your pastor for guidance on what to purchase.  Or, shoot me an email at alle(at)chasing-eden(dot)com - I love helping friends discover music that fits their personal style while helping them enter the Throne Room. And, after 10 years as a musician and worship leader, I’ve got a pretty good library built up to give some personal recommendations!
  2. Spend Time with Him – Don’t forget to pack your Bible and any other “tools” you use for your personal time with God.  As your body and mind relax and take a break, you’ll find more room in your heart for God to speak extra encouragement and refreshment.  If you’re traveling with your family or a group of friends – perhaps you could dedicate a portion of each morning or outing to some group devotional time!
  3. Create Something – Some of my most intimate times with God come from being an image-bearer of His creativity.  Whether that manifests itself in a new song, a piece of art, writing, or any other creative medium doesn’t matter.  Dedicate some time on your vacation to create…you could even make a mini-journal or memory jar of your trip!
  4. Explore Creation – Being in a new physical location (or even exploring a place you’ve never visited in your home town) can uncover some beautiful parks, ocean-views, and mountain-top experiences.  Thank Him for His creativity in making this planet our home and capture it in a photo or journal!
  5. Meet Your Extended Family – If your trip spans over a weekend, take the time to investigate a new church in the area you’re visiting.  Meeting with other Believers who you may never see until we’re all called home is an exciting experience as you worship corporately!

What are some other ways you can live out your life as a worshipper even while “on break” from your other responsibilities?

The Day the Lights Went Out

Pulling into the driveway with a tired toddler and a trunk full of groceries, my husband and I debated whether we should wait out the 80 mph winds and sheets of rain that were pummeling our little Honda, or make a run for the shelter and air in our apartment.  We opted for the latter, but just as we stood dripping inside our front door…the power flickered and went out.  Awesomesauce.  We spent the rest of the evening huddled around candles and flashlights in our living room, playing games and eating pizza, praying for air and safety, and connecting with friends and family to see if we could find a place with air conditioning for the night (no air + 7 months pregnant mama + 16 month toddler = no good).  Thankfully, our power was restored later that evening, but others in our community (including my parents) have been given estimates of 5-7 days before the electric company will be able to reach their homes.

5-7 days of no air in these 100+ temperatures.

5-7 days of cleaning out refrigerators and freezers of spoiled food.

5-7 days of reconfiguring how to cook, live, and sleep.

5-7 days of darkness.

Darkness.  The absence of light.

Darkness can be frightening, uncomfortable, and dangerous.  And while our nation works to restore light to these communities in the coming days, I’m reminded of an even greater darkness that no amount of AEP crews and new transformers can repair.  Our world revolves around the burning ball of the sun every day and yet, we find ourselves in the worst “darkness” imaginable.  A darkness that is marked by sin, selfishness, and a separation from God.  Because we are born with an inherent sin nature and we all fall short of God’s standards of holiness (Romans 3:23), our lives are lived under the structure and rules of the Enemy.  But that moment we surrender our will and lives and call on His Name to invite Him to take His rightful place in our hearts and lives as Savior and Lord, we become “sons of light” (John 12:36).

We can then claim the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:4-6…

“Brothers and sisters, you are not in darkness…All of you are children of the light.  You are children of the day. We don’t belong to the night.  We don’t belong to the darkness.”

There is such joy and comfort in those words…BUT…He doesn’t leave us there.  He doesn’t want us to just be content in our new-found identity – we’re called to DO something with the knowledge we’ve found and the joy we’ve been given…Matthew 5:14-16 gives us this command from Jesus…

“You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill can’t be hidden.  Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand.  Then it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine in front of others.  Then they will see the good things you do.  And they will praise your Father who is in heaven.”

Are the lights on in your heart-home?

How can you “be the light” to someone around you today?

Be Intentional

  • Spending hours in the basement reading and cooling off because we didn’t have air conditioning.
  •  A two-week stint in Israel with my Dad to work on a video project and seeing the “behind-the-scenes” places of the Holy Land.
  •  Navigating local neighborhood maps for my mama as we searched for the best garage sales and treasures.
  •  Late-night trips to Dairy Queen down the street for a small cone and saving the “last bite” for our Golden Retriever.
  •  A vacation to Nashville to recover after a difficult year – having my parents take me to see recording studios and the Gibson Guitar Factory to help me keep my dream intact.
  •  An 11-week tour around the US with my college traveling team, HeartSong to minister at youth camps and churches with our music.

These are some of my favorite summertime memories and I owe them all directly or indirectly to the intentional parenting my Dad and Mama poured into my growing up years.  Now that I have my own little man to chase after and guide, I’m constantly reminded of the value and comfort found in being intentional in my time with him.

The value comes from the sweet memories made, the clear direction given from being rooted in Scripture, and the creativity expressed in our activities and experiences.  The comfort comes from the routine that helps both my son and I flourish and the relaxation that comes from being prepared for the next moment.

But the laid-back pace of summertime…with its call to “sleep in,” its overbearing heat waves, and its lazy schedules…it has the potential to derail that value and comfort.  This summer, I’m committing to push through those temptations and obstacles to keep on track with my intentionality in mothering.  And I want to invite you to join me…

This can look different for every mom.

  • For some it may mean pulling out the Summer Bridge books to maintain the “learning environment” to a degree.
  • For some it may mean planning a small vacation for your family to “get-away” or at least spend some time reconnecting with each other.
  • For some it may mean taking the time to plan out the meals, make an adventure out of the trip to the Farmer’s Market or local grocery, and grab hold of your family’s nutrition habits.
  • For some it may mean remembering to grab the camera, print the pictures, and stick them in the album.

For me…it looks like this…

A simple plan…a few “big-ticket” items, many “first memories” for my little one, little things I want to look back on and say, “The Summer of 2012 was a great season for our family. I’m so glad I took the time to dream and plan and then schedule in those little things with my husband.”

So, what does “being intentional” for the Summertime of 2012 look like for your family?  Share your thoughts and comments with us!

Maker of the Rain

May hangs in the balance of the seasons – between the rain showers of April and the whispered promise of summer in June. Some years, the long-awaited flowers spring forward and move us closer to sleeping in, mowing the lawn, backyard barbeques with friends, and a much needed time of rest and relaxation….

But other years, the rain lingers.
It hangs on and pelts the already drenched ground with more water than it can hold. And we begin to wonder if the sun will ever come out to play again.

Our hearts go through “season changes” like this, too. There are those mountain-top moments after a rough patch where God’s promises come to light and we bask in the glow of being stronger and hold onto another piece of our story to share with others.

But sometimes, the rain lingers…and lingers…and pours flood-threatening amounts of pain, loss, stress, emotion, and fear on our already heavy souls…

My heart has traveled through several of those kinds of seasons in my short 24 years on Earth.  And in some ways, I feel like I’m in one now…there are plenty of good things in my life, blessings that I desperately do not want to ignore or miss…

…but there are also some very dark, stormy patches that my tired soul would rather do without.

For those days – the rainy ones that seem to offer no hope or peace – my first response is always to allow my emotions to dictate my actions.  Not always the best choice, although sometimes a good cry is in order.  Instead, I’m trying to develop the discipline to turn to Scripture and to not seclude myself from others.  I try to confide in a friend, or my husband, or my mama…I ask for godly counsel, I pray, and I try to break the monotony of darkness with things that give my soul comfort.

For me, that’s music.

Specifically, strumming the steel stretched across wood and weaving new melodies with words…one day, several years ago, God gave me a slow, quiet song to encapsulate those dark times and His promise to never forsake me…today, I’d like to share them with you…I wish I had the time to vlog for you, but sometimes the silence can work alongside the simple words in front of the heart and do wonders that a melody cannot touch…

"Rain" via CreationSwap

Raindrops on my windowpane
Echoing the falling rain
That’s pouring in my soul
And if you say that I’m too young
For all this heartache that’s begun
Tell me why, I’m feeling old…why do I feel so cold

But I know the Maker of the rain
The One who sustains me
He won’t let me be moved
And I don’t know what’s to come
But I won’t come undone
No, no, no, no, no
All because I know…
I know the Maker of the rain

Lying here once again
Head and heart still tumbling
Dread the dreams that waken me each night
Flash and thunder strike once more
Find myself hitting the floor
Begging You to stop this fight…when will I be alright

But I know the Maker of the rain
The One who sustains me
He won’t let me be moved
And I don’t know what’s

to come
But I won’t come undone
No, no, no, no, no
All because I know…
I know the Maker of the rain

Hole-y Jeans | Praying for Our Kids

Sitting around the dinner table full of steaming plates, we grasp hands and thank Him for the food.

Snuggled in bed with covers pulled up tight, we fight off sleep and ask for His blessing on our family.

Rushing through the day with errands, deadlines, and stress pulling us in every direction, we throw up a plea for help.

Pacing the hall of the hospital under the fluorescent lights, we plead and bargain in exchange for healing and safety.

Whether it’s a memorized blessing, intense time of intercession, or a quick sentence of “Help me, Jesus!” – prayer has proven to be a “staple” in the diet of a Follower of Christ.  However, there are times when a situation calls for extended periods of intensive communication from our hearts to the Throne Room of God.  In my short time as a parent, I’ve seen the need for and tremendous impact of these dedicated prayer times for my son.  When I’m on my knees, calling on God to work out His will in the life of my Augustine, I am surrendering my own control and admitting that I alone cannot create “change” in his heart.  I truly believe that prayer is the single most effective and powerful tool I have in my “mama toolbox.”

Praying for your children can be a daunting task – there’s so much ground to cover!  And there are countless resources on praying for children – a simple Google search will generate over 31 million potential hits – just a bit overwhelming!  It’s obvious that great men and women of faith have recognized the need to approach God on behalf of the next generation and have taken the time to equip us to lay the foundation of faith before them and ask for God’s blessing on their lives.  To help narrow that search down, I’ve selected two affordable, eBook resources for you to consider:

“31 Days of Prayer for Our Daughters” by The MOD Squad

While I am not a “mama of girls,” I have friends who have attested to the power and need for this resource as they pray for their daughters.  In a world that degrades, pressures, and can demoralize our girls, we have to stand on the front lines to fight for their hearts.  This eBook is available for $1.99 on Kindle and Nook.

“Warrior Prayers: Praying the Word for Boys in the Areas They Need it Most” by: Brooke McGlothlin

I’m blessed to call Brooke a dear friend and have been incredibly impacted by her words to intercede on behalf of my son.  To raise up a generation of men who are firmly grounded in Christ and who uphold His laws has earth-shaking impact.  This eBook is available for $3.99 on Kindle, Nook, and for PDF download.

These resources are a great jumping off point if you’re looking for a way to organize your prayer time for your kids!  Additionally, during the month of May (1-21), TheMOBSociety is hosting a 21 Days of Prayer for Sons challenge, inspired by Brooke’s book, “Warrior Prayers.”  Each day a group of over 900 women gather to pray through Scripture for their sons and encourage each other.  I’m blessed to be leading the challenge over there, so if you’d like more information or want to join us, please send an email to alle.warriorprayers@gmail.com and I’ll connect you.

Let’s wear some holes in our jeans as we pray for our sons and daughters.

When “Dear God” Isn’t Enough

"Praying Hands" from Creation Swap

I’d like to invite you into an experience I had earlier this week… would you allow me a moment to set the stage?  As you enter the living room where we’re gathered, you notice the warm lighting and inviting couches and chairs that circle the perimeter.  A soft taupe carpet tickles your toes as you sit down beside me on the floor and survey the room.  One girl curled up on the side of the couch, eyes closed, lips moving, but no sound coming from them – another young woman sits on the other end in a similar posture with tears streaming down her cheeks.  Beside her, a young man sits in a chair, his head in a pillow and across from them a man sits on an ottoman, head bowed deep to his knees with his hands wrapped around the back.  His wife kneels beside him, facing the ottoman with an open Bible in front of her.  Another couple sits on the loveseat and another in a set of chairs, quietly praying with eyes tightly shut.  One young man has taken up the center of the room and is laying prostrate with hands stretched out before him.  Your eyes flit to my husband who sits beside me on the floor with his head bowed and arms wrapped around his knees as he draws his legs up to his chest.

I take a deep breath and quietly begin to strum my guitar as the man on the ottoman, our leader, leads us in a quiet prayer.  For the next twenty minutes, we sing out with shaky voices and reverent spirits to the Great I Am.

What you’ve stumbled upon here is our LifeGroup meeting from this past week and before you get any crazy ideas that this is a typical night for our group – let me point out the chocolate cake crumbs that give evidence to the dessert we just devoured in honor of two birthdays.  Our group time typically consists of large amounts of laughter and coffee and sometimes ends with an exuberant game of Banana-grams or Dutch Blitz!  But today, we have just started working through a study based on Francis Chan’s book, “Crazy Love.”

Francis Chan's "Crazy Love"

Without getting into too many details (because I want you to read it for yourself), let me say that I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a renewal of their first Love and a push to live their lives as followers of Christ in a more effective and passionate way.  We’ve only made it through the Introduction and first Chapter when you join our group and it’s evident that this study has the power and potential to be life-changing.  In the short section of the book we’ve covered so far, Chan has challenged our preconceived ideas of God and our tendency as Believers to fit Him into a “box” who we  think He is and what we believe He should do for us.  Chan’s words are simple reminders of truths we’ve learned in church, at home, and through our own reading of Scripture, but they are presented in a new light and I’m convicted that I don’t approach the Throne Room of God with the right heart-attitude.

The study prompts an examination of the way we pray – taking us through an exercise of merely looking at the words we use in opening the communication lines with God and how that reflects our heart.  I often fall into the trap of “ritualistic” prayers – I always open with “Dear God,” as if I’m addressing a form letter and move almost immediately into my petitions of “Please help my husband find a better job,” or “I’m so tired this morning – I need fill-in-the-blank,” or even “Well, You know what I need and I trust You’ll meet me there.”  There is nothing wrong with these prayers, but they shouldn’t be a steady diet in my talking to my Creator, Savior, and Father.  Let me back up…in talking with Him – not to Him…this is a two-way street!

Our discussion for the evening has delved into the meaning behind the various names of God and how a better understanding of His attributes can radically change our prayer life.  The more we examine the pictures of God as found in Scripture the clearer the image becomes of who we are actually addressing when we pray.

When you write a letter to a company – you address it: “Dear Sir or Madame,” or “To Whom it May Concern” because you’re not really familiar with who you’re writing to and what kind of person they are – if you were intimately connected with them, your opening lines and the content of your letter would hold a much more personal tone.

In the same manner, by knowing Him better, our communication with Him will become deeper and more intimate.  The scene I described for you earlier is a result of our taking the time to recognize who He is and merely respond appropriately.

He is the Creator of all life and Scripture tells us that all things were created for His purpose, not ours.

He is completely and perfectly set-apart in His holiness and it is only by the saving grace found in relationship with His Son, Jesus that we are even able to approach His Throne.

He is LORD and as such is in complete control of everything we have – including our spouses, our children, our finances, our home, our jobs, our passions.

He is King and as royalty is deserving of our reverence and awe at even being admitted an audience in His Court.

He is Father and graciously guides and directs our paths with passionate love and an all-knowing will.

I challenge you this week to join me in truly examining who God is and see how that affects your one-on-one time with Him!  What attributes and/or names of God grab your heart the most – when you pray, how does that “image” you hold of Him affect your communication?

Of Stars, Whales, and Your Part in the Revolution Song

A friend of mine shared a video on Facebook the other day.  I typically don’t take the time to watch those videos…especially the ones that are a bit longer like this one.  But the title intrigued me…”Mashup of Stars and Whales Singing God’s Praise” and I felt God gently tugging at my heart-strings, so I clicked that little sideways triangle…

Please carve out 15 minutes this week to watch this and bring a box of tissues.  Perhaps it’s just the sensitive, creative-soul in me, but by the end of this, I was bawling.  If you’re short on time, fast-forward to 8:15 and you’ll get the gist of it.

What a beautiful reminder of our place in this universe…I’m so excited for Heaven and our chance to experience the full weight of all Creation singing His glory and majesty.  But friends, we’re not meant to merely wait for that day and carry out life as we know it in the meantime…we were created to be contributors in that Great Song.

As we continue our focus on “Revolution” at Must Love God this month, I humbly ask that you take a few minutes to evaluate your life…your heart…your addition to the Revolution Song.

Ever since that simple combination of sound waves crossed the room from my laptop’s speakers to my ears, I’ve been grappling with these two questions…

What revolution has God impressed deep into my soul that brings a unique contribution to the Symphony of Praise all around me?

As a daughter of the King, I’ve been given a set of talents, spiritual gifts, circles of influence, and specific circumstances…all with the opportunity to proclaim His goodness and grace.  Am I being faithful to the Heart Revolution He has entrusted to me?

What about you, sister?  I don’t know you, but I’m eager to hear what your part is in the Revolution Song!

Do you pound the foundational rhythms as you raise up young ones in His Name?

Do you add the thanks-giving harmony of strings with your craft…be it art, writing, music, crafting?

Do you swell with the resounding blasts of a horn as you balance being part of the work-force and managing your home?

When you open your mouth to join your voice with the Choir, what does your verse say about His work in your life?
