Staying Healthy

I’ve gone all winter without any cold or flu.
I tend to not go out much. Bible study, Youth Group, and Church. Of course the grocery store.
We have a wood stove so I am able to air out the house often.
I get fresh air by going to feed my chickens.
I don’t want to get sick. Moms don’t have time to get sick.
This last weekend I got the chance to ‘run away’ with The Principal to Whitefish, MT.
Monday morning, you guessed it, A COLD!

I posted on Facebook I would be playing hermit until it passed. I was being selfish and didn’t want to share.
I got a couple of thank you’s.
I had one friend say she does the same…She’s not being a sissy. She just doesn’t want to spread it around.

So I am taking my Emergen-C. Keeping my tissues with lotion near by.
I will embrace this down time with reading.
I will be researching natural cold remedies and stocking up on those herbs and vitamins.

  • Andrographis
  • Elderberry
  • Ginseng and Eleuthero
  • Licorice root
  • Zinc

Do you have a go-to remedy for the common cold? Do you avoid crowds during the winter and early spring to avoid catching one?

Lifestyle Changes

Last month I wrote on a new diagnosis that my hubs had received.
On January 1st we started Whole30. Basically, Paleo on steroids.

I’ve done great….except for the cheating. I have been using ‘real’ creamer in my coffee, and we had a total bust weekend where we threw caution to the wind and ate what we wanted.

Hubs and I have done Body for Life. On their system you get a cheat day. Well. Let me tell you. My body was NOT HAPPY! My, ahem, plumbing specifically.

This Whole30 is going to be our new way of eating. Paleo actually. We may do Whole30 once in a while to reset if needed.

The positives outweigh the negatives. I’ve had more energy. I’ve had less bloating. I lost 8 pounds in a month with hardly any exercise. Think of how well I could have done if I had worked out too!

I am here to encourage you! You will NOT regret doing Whole30!

A New Diagnosis

A new diagnosis in our family. Type 2 diabetes.

With it a new awareness. Changes. For the person diagnosed and for the whole family.

Changes in diet. Changes in exercise.

This isn’t just a diagnosis for one person, but for the family. To support the person we will all adjust our lifestyle.

I am researching. I am researching menus. I am researching lingo.

  • Ac1 levels.
  • Plate method of portion control.
  • Red rice yeast for cholesterol
  • Control your sugar intake
  • Control starches
  • What are Ace inhibitors?
  • Checking feet daily
  • Aerobic heart rate

I am overwhelmed.

I am not alone.

He will sustain us. He will guide us.

He will use this ALL for good.

I will continue to share our journey…..Please share any knowledge ….

Thankful In All?

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Have you ever been so content, so thankful, that you could burst?
Those times when life is good. Bills are paid. Pantry is full. Kids are healthy.

Then God throws you a curve ball and your world crashes down around you.
You have a new normal.
When life won’t ever be the way it was before you answered the phone.

Philippians 4:6 ESV / 173

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Even in those times are you still thankful? Are you still content even when your apple cart is turned upside down?

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV / 11

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope

When my world was turned upside down I had comfort in the fact that He was in control. He had a plan. It may not have been my plan. But He knows what’s better.

So for those times when you don’t think you can be thankful or content….rest in His arms. Know He has your best interest in mind.

Be Aware!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I know it goes without saying to take care of your ‘girls.’

My cousin did.

She found a lump when she was nursing her wee babe.

She fought! Hard!

God needed her home.

On October 4th 2010 He called her name.

She was 39.

I have a mammogram every year since Jamie was diagnosed.

Since BEFORE I turned 40.

Breast Cancer isn’t just for the over 40 crowd.

If there is a history in your family

Put on the FULL Armor of God

This last weekend we went to an outdoor training camp-out. It was an amazingly educational weekend with like-minded people. Sunday morning we had service by the campfire. I wish we could have church that way every week!

The preacher spoke on spiritual battles and putting on the full armor of God. Being ready for what may come your way.
If you have the Holy Spirit IN you that battle fighting is much easier….not a cake walk….but easier when He is on your side. Who better to have in your corner than Jesus??

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Now, this mom is on to something! Being totally ‘souled’ out for God. What an example for her daughter, even though she seems a bit perturbed that her daughter caught her on video. :)

Your Body is a Temple

So it’s summer….again.

It happens every year about the same time.

The picture is of my bathing suit.

Basic black, Speedo brand.

Some years days it fits better than others.

It just depends on how early in the year

I look at the calendar and see

that summer is approaching….again.

That I decide I better get busy with

healthier eating and exercise

to look good in said suit.

I want to say I don’t care what others

think about how I look in that suit.

But I do…..a little.

My hubby doesn’t mind that I am a little

extra fluffy when he hugs me.

Honestly, his opinion is the only one that matters.

But, I do care about my health.

A few extra yo-yo pounds

might be ok.

But what are you putting INTO your body?

I don’t even worry so much about calorie count

as I do content.

Fruits and veggies.

Lean meats and fish.

1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

Leave the cookies and chips at the store.

If you don’t even buy them,

they can’t tempt you when you are bored, watching

Jericho on Netflix.  Ahem.

Change your mindset.

Think about the example you

are setting for your children.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?

You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.

So glorify God in your body.

Remember, you didn’t put on those extra 5, 10,

or in my case 20+ pounds overnight.

They won’t come off overnight.

You got this!

My Chains Are Broken

….The hour I first believed!
The shame I had.
The burden I carried.
Sin unspoken.
He knew and I was ashamed.
I didn’t feel worthy.
I have had Redemption
I am FREE in Christ.
I am FORGIVEN!

Up Down, Up Down

It’s amazing how exercise really does make you feel better.

It’s the getting out there that is the battle.

I haven’t run since September 18, 2011.

I ran a half marathon that day.

The next morning was the call about my mother passing away.

I signed up to run a 5K on St Patrick’s Day.

A week before the race

My bestie, whom I was supposed to run with, called.

Her son was being airlifted to Harborview.

He is alive!

He won’t ever walk again.

Instead of running we spent the day in ICU

You see….

Running is much more mental

than physical for me.

It helps my mental health as much as my waistline.

So why can’t I get back out there?

I KNOW it will be for the better!

feel better

look better

A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Proverbs 15:13

I have weaned off of anxiety medication I have taken for 5 years.

I feel like the fog has lifted….I can think clearer

but

there is still that mental block

of getting out there….

Anxiety in the heart of a man weighs it down, But a good word makes it glad.” Proverbs 12:25

I will take it to Him who knows me like none other!

Why Not You?

Last month I wrote about my bestie and her son Nic.

This journey my friend is on is one I

can.not.wrap.my.mind.around

I was blessed last month to spend 2 whole days

with them at Children’s in Seattle

I got to see the struggles that Nic

is facing everyday

I got to talk with my friend

I told her

“Not gonna lie this is testing my faith and he isn’t even my son”

“Why Nic? Why you?”

Her response….

“Why not Nic?”

“Why not us?”

“Bad things happen to good people”

What I heard was what makes us so special that things won’t happen to us

What I have always thought was if we

are good people

law abiding citizens

rule followers

we are ABOVE bad

Silly me!
