Update from the Battle Lines

Earlier this year, I declared war on Fibromyalgia and I said I would keep you updated. To be honest, I feel a little bad using such strong words against my condition. Fibromyalgia is not the enemy. In fact, it is more of a friend. How could I call it anything less when it has brought me so close to God?

Nevertheless, my fibro-friend needs to lighten up a bit and learn to work with me a little better.

Would you like to know how it’s going?

Well, slow. That’s to be expected. You want to ease fibro into new things. If you sneak up and surprise it, you’ll regret it.

When I think back, I felt best when I was taking care of myself nutritionally. Quality vitamins are important for a body. That is where I started.Step One: Vitamins & Supplements

I spent lots of time researching what might be the best supplements for my physical and mental needs. Here are some needs I considered:

  • Energy
  • Muscle recovery
  • Joint health
  • Immunity
  • Brain function
  • Digestive health

I looked online and considered some of the well-known, more expensive nutritional supplements. After comparing prices, ingredients and reviews, I decided to go with what I could find at GNC. They had everything I was looking for with good quality, but a better price.

I began feeling a difference within a few days. I felt great within a couple weeks.  So, I knew it was time to take on something new.

This is when trouble usually comes. When I am feeling great, I believe I can do anything. Then my body tells me otherwise. So, I have to be careful.

My something “new” was to become more consistent with exercise. A fibromyalgic body should do half the work and have twice the rest. I once read that the best way to introduce exercise is to add one segment at a time over a long period. That means that you begin with posture. Once you feel confident that you have a strong posture, you can move on to stretching. After about a week of that, you can add a warm-up to your routine and then low-impact exercise a week later, and so on. It sounds like a good plan, but it is one I have never succeeded in. It is too boring and too long of a process. I have never felt like I was accomplishing anything with that plan.

This time, I decided to build up time of exercise. I started with a very short five minute routine I found on youtube with the plan of adding five to ten minutes a month, up to an hour. Even that plan sounds slow, but it is important to give a sensitive system time to adjust and strengthen.

Once I got to ten minutes, I was feeling pretty good about myself and also, a little impatient. (That’s my biggest problem in this process.) So, one day after a workout, I invited my neighbor to go for a walk. Our walks are long and leisurely, but still are a lot for me. I did not take into account that I also needed to go shopping that day and that I would be teaching ten children in Bible class that night. Oops. That set me back quite a bit. In fact, it knocked me out of commission for a few days.

Lesson learned? Be thankful for feeling good and be content for where I am.  Also, think ahead. I may feel good now, but what does the rest of the day have in store? (That should be an automatic question for most fibro-warriors.)

Now it is March and I am still feeling pretty good. Of course, I have a long way to go. More changes are to come. In fact, I am in the process of changing my diet now. I look forward to telling you more about that next time!

We Want to Walk Through Life With YOU! Join us!

Must Love God
Community and accountability are two principles that are very important to the heart of must love God. Basically, no one needs to walk through this life alone, and its so much easier to have someone walking right next to you!! This is very much the concept the picnic table that we visualize when we dream about the MLG community.

We started count me accountable Thursdays as a simple link up where we could all share the things we are working on. This year we hope more of you will join us, telling us about your exercise, healthy eating, Bible memorization, One Word, and anything else you want to be held accountable for. Those of us that have participated have found, the projects are much easier to follow through with when we know we are “giving a report” on Thursday!!

We also want to introduce HelloMornings as another way to find community and accountability. Many of our mlg writers and community members are or have been part of a HelloMornings group. Simply put, HelloMornings is a gathering of women in the wee hours of the morning committing to start their day with the Lord. We feel that the pillars of hellomornings (God, plan, move) closely align with mustloveGod.

You can find out more about HelloMornings here. Two of our writers, Meredith and Amanda, are accountability captains and would love to extend an invitation to you. If you prefer a Facebook group or a different time zone- feel free to find a group that suits you!!! Registration is now open!!

So would you gather around the picnic table with us? Link up a post from this week that shares something you’ve been working on! We want to encourage you!! Don’t have a blog post? Then tell us in the comments!!

Getting Fit with @Peak313 #4x4Reset

Our next 4×4 post comes from my favorite fit blogger- Clare from peak313. She just started a fit challenge over at her blog (check it out) so she let me interview her here for this post!!

Peak313.com

1. What’s your fave workout?

Um. Don’t you know better than to ask a fitness lover that? Anything incorporating weights and plyos! I also love pilates!

2. Whats your fave bible verse?

Man, another hard one! My life verse has always been John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” However, in the past few years, 1 Thess 5:23, “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameles at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

3. How does physical and spiritual wellness connect for you?

It connects in every way possible. first off, I believe that everything God has given us is just that–His. So the things like our finances, family, bodies, ministries etc, need to be stewarded in a way that is honoring to Him. So I need to assess my physical health in light of that, just as I do those other areas. I also feel that God has given us our physical lives to give us great teachable moments about our spiritual lives. I can’t tell you the lessons that I’ve learned on my journey with my physical health that has impacted my spiritual life. I think they go hand and hand. Also, I’m pretty sure there will be pilates in heaven…right?

4. Any sneak peeks to what is coming to your blog you’d like me to mention?

It’s not a sneak peek because I announced it on Monday, but I have a 5 week challenge called “Living and Active” that will be incorporating accountability in both exercising and verse memorization. I have been FLOORED at the interest in it and am excited to see how it meets everyone on their road to a better life! That will pretty much keep me busy here for a while and then we’ll see where God guides from there!!

Kristi back here! Thanks Clare for sharing with us!!
It’s not too late to join in! Also- Clare has a ton of printables and work out videos- (her site is a gold mine!!!!).

And today’s challenge:

Building Your Strength for Him

Recently I stumbled upon this image of a sculpture by Jon D. Hair:

Rather timely in this Olympic year. (Then again, isn’t His timing always perfect?)

The same week I found this image, I learned the Hebrew words of neshama (spirit), nefesh (mind/soul) and guf (body), noting that nefesh represents both mind and soul. Similarly we read in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 that in preparation for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ we must be sure to keep our whole spirit, soul, and body blameless. So in reading the inscription of the sculpture meant to speak to Olympians and athletes everywhere, we see a direct correlation to God’s living word as written by Paul to the church of Thessalonica and believers everywhere. Paul’s purpose in 1 Thessalonians was to strengthen the faith of Christians and to pass on the assurance of Christ’s return. Paul also encouraged believers to live as though they expected Christ to return at any moment. No one knows when Jesus will return and so while we wait we are to remain faithful to God. In other words, we are to remain blameless with our whole spirit, soul, and body. Perfect, pure, unblemished.

Often times as believers we focus on the strengthening of our neshama and nefesh, our spirit and our soul. And while spending time in prayer and bible study are important disciplines to strengthen our walk with Christ, we can not neglect the importance of keeping our guf (body/flesh) strong as well, especially when we consider that attacks of the flesh are where the enemy really gets us. So dedicate time each day to pray in you prayer closet, in your backyard or at church, but also dedicate just as much time to working out at home, outside, or at the gym. As your spirit is strengthened by trials and tribulations in life, so will your body be strengthened by those extra weights you lift and those additional thirty minutes you spend challenging your heart and lungs. And as you feed your soul each day with the living word of God, feed your body each day with nutritious, whole food. Just as His Word re-energizes your mind and soul, so will nutritious food re-energize your body.We know that Olympic athletes train each day with the hope of achieving gold in four years. As God’s saints so must we train each day for the gold that awaits us in His Kingdom. And so I pray, in the words of Paul, May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

More Than Just Me

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.  Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
                                                                                                                    Romans 12:1-2 NLT

We’ve been trying something a little different with our kids lately.  They spent most of the summer swimming, but now that we’re getting back into the routine of homeschool and tighter schedules, we wanted to make sure we kept them exercising.  Not to mention the fact that my husband and I both need to get more exercise, and I have my first 5K coming up next month – so we started taking them to our local high school track to run and walk as a family.  We discovered something that kind of surprised us: our boys love to run.  Although I’ve been training for this upcoming 5K, I got showed up pretty badly…by my 7 year old and my 10 year old.

One night after we came home, I was thinking about how amazing it was that we found this love of exercise in our boys.  What really amazed me is was the realization that fitness is about a whole lot more than me.  It’s about setting an example for those around me, and especially for my family.  My boys both love to read.  That’s not too surprising, because I’ve been reading to them since they were babies.  Reading is one my favorite hobbies, and they’ve learned to love it because I love it.  Our boys also love dogs because we’ve had a dog their entire lives.  Some of the things they love are uniquely their own, special, God-given talents and passions.  But so much of who they are and what they do is formed from what they see.

Fitness and health are no different.  My sons are learning their eating habits from us, their parents.  They are learning the importance of exercise from us.  They are learning how important caring for our physical body is from us.  So what are we teaching them?  What kind of example are we setting?  Knowing that completely changes the way I look at my fitness routine.  My sons are learning and forming habits that will last a lifetime.  I want to – I have to – do all I can to empower them to create good habits.  It’s not just my health on the line – it’s my family’s health too.

Count Me Accountable. Because I CANNOT do it alone.

If you have ever been in the dieting, trying to get healthy cycle, you may have noticed that many, many, many weight loss programs have big sales in September.  It seems that after the summer fun, the trend is to buckle down and re-commit to healthier living, more disciplined schedules, and take charge of whatever area in our lives tends to get out of control without constant supervision.

One thing that I have learned, is that you can try to compartmentalize your life —  but it doesn’t really work.  He is in it all.

He is in my early morning routine.  (He is the REASON for my early morning routine.)

He is in my running, or my attempts at crossfit.

He is with me when I am staring into the refrigerator, convincing myself not to eat everything in sight.

He is with me when I am trying to speak in love, and not react in anger to my children.

Whatever you are trying to accomplish, or get under control, we are here to support you. If you blog about your challenges, successes and struggles, we would love for you to link up with us.  If you don’t blog, but want the support, then we would love for you to leave your goals, or the progress you have made on your goals in the comment section.

If you are getting to the point where enough is enough, then stick around and let us help you.  In September we will be taking the month to re-set our priorities.  We will explore God’s sovereignty in our spiritual lives, our physical health and well-being, our mental routines, and our emotional states.  We will re-charge, re-focus, and most importantly, re-set. Join us?

During the 4X4 Reset in September, the Count Me Accountable link-up will be held over at my blog, My Journey to Authenticity.  Please don’t wait to start making goals, and seeking and finding a community of women all on similar journeys!  If you have any questions about the process, or where to start, PLEASE ask!  Let’s get some answers!  Together, we can achieve more than we ever dreamed possible.  I have seen it happen!!  Will you be the next one to decide to take one step in the right direction? We are here for you!

What Difference Can 90 Days Make?

I don’t know about you, but I love seeing results. When I do something really hard that takes a lot of work/energy/concentration, I want to be able to know it was worth it, and I want to know it right this very second. (I’d prefer to see results yesterday, but immediately would work.) You may not know this, but if you are pretty out of shape and have 60 extra pounds to drop, it doesn’t matter how hard you work in one day, you won’t see the results in the mirror after you shower. You have to keep working hard. Every. Single. Day.

This is where I have trouble. In our world of drive-up fast food, get it from the internet right now, you don’t have to wait for anything ever, I want to do my 30 minute work out, and look amazing the next day. When it doesn’t happen that way, or even after five days, or twelve days, I get frustrated and quit. At that point, I return to loathing myself for giving up again, and so the cycle goes.

CassieTimeline

I’m ready to break the cycle. I don’t think God wants me to be trapped in this prison I’ve made of myself where it’s hard to breathe, and I have trouble playing with my kids and my dogs, and lack motivation in general. I’ve chosen a 90 day exercise program that I can keep up with. It isn’t so challenging that I pray to die so I can be done with it, but it makes me work hard and push to get through.

I’m going to do all 90 days of this program, take a daily multi-vitamin, and use a healthy meal replacement protein smoothie. I won’t guarantee that my diet will change completely right away, but I’m making a conscious effort to buy more fruit and vegetables, and eat fewer processed foods. I may grumble, and I know I’ll be in pain some days (Today, for instance.), but I’m going to have faith that in three months, I will be able to see changes in my body, in my attitude, in my self-esteem. Then, I will choose a bigger goal, something that really pushes my limits. Maybe I will start running again. Maybe I will finally make it through a Jillian Michaels video (without crying like a baby). I don’t know for sure yet. All I know is that I need to do this. My family deserves it. My body deserves it. (Besides, my closet is dying for some cute clothes!!)

What difference can 90 days make in your health? I challenge you to choose a path, whether it be healthier eating, an exercise program, or something else, and keep at it for 90 days. Take a couple of pictures of yourself today (and maybe some measurements), repeat in 30, 60, and 90 days, and see just what you can do. We won’t see results tomorrow, but I hear that good things happen when you persevere.

Stop Looking at the Big Picture

When I look around my house, or in the mirror, all I can see is the big picture.

My kitchen when Kat's away for a week and no one asks me to clean
Creative Commons License photo credit: abbamouse

I get so busy stressing over every little detail of housework that needs to be done (desperately) and every single pound I need to lose that I can’t focus on what needs to be done right now to get things under control.

  • The dogs are shedding so much that as soon as I finish cleaning up dog hair off the kitchen floor, there are piles of it on the living room floor.
  • There are six people in the house who insist on wearing clothes every day (actually 7, but one does her own laundry) and dirty clothes pile up quickly.
  • I’m beginning to think the dishes dirty themselves because there is no way we could be using so many!
  • Oh, and to top it off, I’m still obese.

The silly thing is that I have already taken the time to break down the important cleaning projects and split them up throughout the week so I won’t get overwhelmed. I’ve already chosen an exercise program that tells me exactly what to do every single day to get the best results. Here’s the tricky part…If I stand around thinking about all the little details, I don’t get anything done.

So, that’s where I am. I’m surrounded, bogged down, and overwhelmed.

My husband always asks how you’d eat an elephant. The answer? One bite at a time. Today I will make a conscious effort to change the way I look at things. Instead of seeing an entire house in shambles, I will look at my list and just do what it says for the day. Instead of being ashamed of my weight, I will pop in that DVD and just push play. Instead of feeling unappreciated and overwhelmed, I will be thankful for my beautiful, loving family and the home we have to live in.

I have a couple of tools I’m using (besides my cleaning list and workout DVDs) to help me focus on the positives in my life. The first is an e-book called “The 21 Days of Gratitude Challenge” by Shelley Hitz. It gives just an easy little exercise each day to help turn negative feelings into feelings of gratitude. You can buy it for 99 cents on Amazon Kindle right now. The next is a free application I acquired for my phone called Attitudes of Gratitude Journal. All you do is type in what you are grateful for and push the little button and it saves each entry for you with the date and time. When life gets to be too much, I can just open the app and have a list of things to be thankful for.

When it comes down to it, no one is getting the attention from me they deserve (this includes the dirty socks and ceiling fans). I need to slow down, take a deep breath, and remember that “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 (New International Version)

Yes, even scrub baseboards and 3 sets of power squats. Everything.

Must Love God

Up Down, Up Down

It’s amazing how exercise really does make you feel better.

It’s the getting out there that is the battle.

I haven’t run since September 18, 2011.

I ran a half marathon that day.

The next morning was the call about my mother passing away.

I signed up to run a 5K on St Patrick’s Day.

A week before the race

My bestie, whom I was supposed to run with, called.

Her son was being airlifted to Harborview.

He is alive!

He won’t ever walk again.

Instead of running we spent the day in ICU

You see….

Running is much more mental

than physical for me.

It helps my mental health as much as my waistline.

So why can’t I get back out there?

I KNOW it will be for the better!

feel better

look better

A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Proverbs 15:13

I have weaned off of anxiety medication I have taken for 5 years.

I feel like the fog has lifted….I can think clearer

but

there is still that mental block

of getting out there….

Anxiety in the heart of a man weighs it down, But a good word makes it glad.” Proverbs 12:25

I will take it to Him who knows me like none other!

Are you getting enough water?

The point of the MLG community is to help women find wellness at the Living Well.  We’ve shared our hearts, welcomed each other into our lives, and are growing together.

Today I want us to do a wellness check- how are you doing?  How can we help you?

I love making pneumonics, alliterations, and mantras.  Basically I use anything to make my life easier.  Let’s just say a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and three babies has not left room in my brain for much else.  However, I remember how I would’ve never made it through pharmacy school if it weren’t for pneumonics and alliterations.  (Believe me- you don’t want to hear my song to help me remember diabetes drugs).

As we focus here on whole-life wellness, I came up with a little pneumonic- a checklist of sorts- to help us remember each day how we can achieve this wellness.

Are you getting enough WATER daily?

W: WORD

this is the foundation for our spiritual wellness!  Are you getting daily time in the Word–either study, reading plans, or memorization?

A:  AFFIRMATIONS

it’s so apparent to me that what you think about you bring about!!  This affirmation part of the equation involves bringing every thought captive.  It also includes anything you use to snap yourself out of that downward spiral or to encourage you to push play on the exercise DVD.  In fact, MUST LOVE GOD is one of those very affirmations.  When thinking and praying about this community, the terms “must love God” fit perfectly.  When things are all going wrong, all the kids are crying, dinner is burning, remember, it all comes down to this- I must love God.  Another one- “eat clean, move more, refresh daily” and “turn north”.

T:  THANKS

it’s my word for 2012 but I’ll let you use it too!!  Much like affirmations, giving thanks in ALL THINGS reminds me to slow down, change my thinking, and focus on Him.

E:  ENERGIZE

this is not an easy one for me…I want so badly to be fit and healthy but the actual getting out and exercising…oh that is hard.  But, I will challenge you to add purposeful movement to your day.  Not athletic?  Neither am I!!  But I’m finding some super fun tools from YouTube, the App store, and Peak 313.  What is your favorite way to energize?

R:  REFRESH

in this pneumonic, refresh actually stands for what we eat and drink.  Filling ourselves with nutrient dense foods makes such a difference in our days.  As I’ve been tinkering with my own personal diet, I’m learning so much about what foods make me feel good and what foods don’t!!

Can this pneumonic of WATER help you with your daily goals?  What are some ways you can incorporate WATER into your life?
